Work at the exhibition Out of Order, 2021

Jan Mucha’s pictures almost always have something abstract and architectural about them. At their centre are forms reminiscent of steel structures, but not only that. On closer inspection, graphic elements such as plant leaves or ornaments can be seen in the background. Overlaid on top of these are portraits, sometimes in contrasting colours, sometimes integrated into the background, so that the subjects become one with the background, merging into it and disappearing. And in this merging of form, background, colour, figure and composition, i.e. composition, lies perhaps the deeper message of the works: man between self-discovery, work and economic and ecological exploitation. Humans are falling out of industrial production because they are no longer needed. What will we do with the newly gained time when AI and machines take over our work, relieve us of it? Will we return to religion, as in the painting ‘Blessing’? In any case, the paintings are not unambiguous. They invite us to play with our associations and to find ourselves somewhere in them.
